Donate or Dump? #ALSiCEBUCKETCHALLENGE

Are you wondering yet why all your friends on Facebook are dumping buckets of ice water on their heads and than DEMANDING 3 – 4 of their other friends to DUMP ICE water on their heads??

Honestly, I’m quite infatuated with the fact that people feel so compelled to complete this “challenge” with in 24 hours of their friends giving out this DEMAND via Facebook ….

It is like the modern day CHAIN MAIL – but more instantaneous … !! this ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE is one of the most viral social video around. People are not only doing this as individuals but completing the ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE with their PIC ( Parnter in Crime)

, Boyfriends & Girlfriends, mothers, sisters, aunts, brothers ,cousins, and dogs. and HEY EVEN CELEBS like LeBron are completing the challenge too! Is it really a challenge to dump a bucket of ice water on your head? to me it seems pretty easy to find someone to film you doing the deed or to simply set up your smart phone at the right angle to properly film yourself dumping ice on your head. grabbing a bowl or a real bucket (cheers to those who have gone out of their way to buy a bucket for your video) to then fill with water and put some ice cubes into it.

I’d like to give a shout out to those who try and find the most incredible scenery to complete the challenge in front of – like whoa you are super awesome doing this challenge and in front of somewhere wonderful ! and it is rather bizarre for those who didn’t do it out side on their gorgeous patio with a view of their loving city’s skyline but we know what ALL of our FACEBOOK FRIENDS bathrooms look like?? No thanks.

It’s practically unavoidable to sign into Facebook and not see hundreds ( well if you are popular) of “friends” posting a video of them having ice water dumped on their heads and SCREAMING like ahhh i had no idea this would be cold!!

Did anyone really think about WHY they are doing this? Who started this ?

WELL WELL WELL – if you even cared to look up what ALS meant cheers to you – if you did not keep reading to find out :

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis aka the Lou Gehrig’s disease

Side note : for those of you who do not know who Lou Gehrig is, He was an incredible baseball player, a hall of fame guy! This JULY 4th 2014 will mark 75 years since legendary Hall of Famer and CMG Worldwide client, Lou Gehrig heartbreakingly said goodbye to baseball with his iconic “Luckiest Man” speech at Yankee Stadium in 1939.

I think it is quite the coincidence that this summer marked a big anniversary for Lou Gehrig stepping down from baseball as the Iron Man and that the ALS ice bucket challenge began !

ALS gained awareness first by Lou Gehrig, when he had to stop playing baseball his passion due to ALS.

ALS is a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscles (muscle action we are able to control, such as those in the arms, legs, and face). unfortunately ALS is incurable and has not really received much attention or funding until now. there have been millions of donations made and over a million videos posted of people completing the ice bucket challenge. while i do think it is fabulous and fantastic that ALS has now gotten a significant amount of awareness and funding i do worry people still are not taking the next step to research ALS !

According to Wikipedia ” The challenge was popularized in the United States when, on July 15, 2014, golfer Chris Kennedy did the ice-bucket challenge and challenged his cousin Jeanette Senerchia of Pelham, N.Y., whose husband, Anthony, has had ALS for 11 years. A day later she did the challenge while her 6-year-old daughter filmed her in front of their house. Ms. Senerchia’s network on Facebook connected with Pat Quinn, a 31-year-old in Yonkers, N.Y., who was diagnosed with ALS in March 2013. Mr. Quinn called upon his friends and family. Soon, his whole network was posting challenges, including family in Florida, friends in Ireland and Greece, and a bar full of locals, which was broadcast on local television.

Mr. Quinn’s Facebook network overlapped with Massachusetts resident and former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, who has ALS, began posting about it on Twitter.

Someone participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge.

The ice bucket challenge has also hit the United Kingdom, social media feeds are filled with people doing it for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. “

If you fail to dump a bucket of ice water on your head within 24 hours of nomination you are suppose to donate $50 – $100 or more to ALS. So it’s up to you …. DUMP or DONATE?

I say BOTH !

Donate Here: http://www.alsa.org/donate/

This just in : as of August 17th 2014 the ALS Association said they have raised over 13.3 Million dollars in donates this summer, predominately from the social media sweep of the ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE.

As of August 11, the association said they had raised $1.35 million nationally since July 29th. The numbers are increasing by the minute.

This challenge is mainly a viral video in the USA.

Cheers to social media being used for a great good !!

Feed The Deed

When in an interview the Question of what is my relationship with Charitable Work?
For the first time I was puzzled … how have I been contributing to society .. something beyond myself ?

In my younger years … I was the Director of community service at My High School which I attended for FOUR years. In college my sorority held events and did activities monthly. Or I attended events for other frats or sororities.

Back then the answer would have drawn me to explain a multitude of involvements.

But now a few years after that- where do I stand ?

The Nomination Called – I had been summoned to take a video of myself doing good. In however which way I wanted I could  #feedthedeed . Options were limitless. The decision came down to what would be both meaningful and/  or some what convenient.

Feed the Deed
Instantly prompted me to look to my belly for the answer. The polar vortex of 2014 is mad all mighty.  I wanted to provide a hot breakfast and coffee giftcard to a homeless person.
As I walked the 4 block radius of downtown I did not encounter one “homeless person ”
> Ann Arbor lacking homeless people ?
> Homeless or Hipster ? Sometimes in Ann Arbor it is hard to tell if an #ootd is the fullest extent self expression or the debacle of a homeless person.

hh

Regardless and frustrated that I could not complete what I had set out for… I made a reaction video.  Reaction videos are common amongst Gen Y kids. #RV is an advanced and modern version of a home video.

See my Reaction Video here

How did I proceed ?
By Posting my reaction video to my Snapchat Story and than downloading it to my cell phone. I than chose to upload the 4 second clip to my FacebookTimeline. The news circulated to my close network ties.
Facebook Timeline casts a larger net than the Snapchat Story. The communication with Snapchat Story is a more direct line relationship.   It tracks viewership and allows for quicker & perpetual contact. Facebook may be seen by a larger amount of close network ties. The true value lies in what sort of  influence the mass amount of views retain. Your social influence can be measured by a Klout Score.

What can I deduce by comparing the results of response is that both create awareness.
What came to me was … the person receiving must not be limited to oneself who is categorized as homeless. Who wouldn’t love a little grub!? I personally love being treated to a meal !

THE DETROIT ARTIST MARKET

Detroit Artist Market (DAM) supports and guides Detroit artists to fulfillment.  Endowing the creationist with the green space.

Spreading green to the DAM allows it to function.
I hope to get down to see two separate exhibit rotations in the next year.

Today there is a personal social responsibility placed on people via social networks. What we choose to share and create awareness around is solely up to YOU. Would you rather disengage and not have a profile at all ?

The first is your social responsibility persona that is upheld in a commitment to your network of close ties. Are you a nice person? Are you not? What are you really being held accountable for? Must you complete the deed in 24 hours? Whats really going to happen if you don’t? Wouldn’t it be best to commit to a long term charitable thing? Is it disingenuous otherwise? Will our Facebook Friends defriend us for not completing the #feedthedeed challenge? Is it not good enough to make a monetary donation through the internet? Is it really a challenge to do something nice??

Why does the act of feeding the deed be limited to a one time jolt of forced energy ?!  To continue the #feedthedeed im going to surprise a few fantastic followers of my social network. May it be YOU? just wait and see.

Gen Y , But Why

Gen Y , But Why

Expectations, Expectations, Expectations …

I learned to live with out expectations, in high school – i realized what is the point of getting your hopes up, and than being disappointed, when if you either A) keep your expectations low, or B) not have any at all – you will always end up happy !

This really began with my movie expectations – i truly over hyped every movie, and than was typically let down. I then thought, well if i don’t look too much into the movie – or just trust my friends and go see one’s they were in dire need to see – it should be good ! And hey ! it has worked … this led me to be more opened minded & take this mantra to other aspects of my life.

The article attached, although a long read, is a solid one. I think that all gen Y readers can relate, and if you’re older than that – you should read it as well to better understand us perfect angles.

We are brought up with the mentality WE ARE THE BEST – and nothing less ! We can achieve all & more than the American dream has to offer. Winning awards such as 6th place ( not me of course) as young kids gave us the confidence and perpetuated the mentality of an inflated self. We have social media filters & platforms to distort our personal image.

A commonality heard “whoa but he looks so different on facebook” ! well our social media imprints on the world may not directly reflect a clear vision. at the very least, people can edit & alter their photos to a wild extreme.

“Social media creates a world for Lucy where A) what everyone else is doing is very out in the open, B) most people present an inflated version of their own existence, and C) the people who chime in the most about their careers are usually those whose careers (or relationships) are going the best, while struggling people tend not to broadcast their situation.  This leaves Lucy feeling, incorrectly, like everyone else is doing really well, only adding to her misery:”

Social media has made the world a much more open place … watch out for what you are looking to uncover.
